For author J.K. MacLaren, it became the perfect setting for Full Throttle, her debut romance centered on a woman determined to make history.

MacLaren joined Suspenders Unbuttoned Media to talk about creating the world of Full Throttle, the real-life motorsport inspiration behind its heroine, the complicated relationship at its center and the surprising amount of research that went into putting Formula One on the page.

Meet Juliette

At the center of Full Throttle is Juliette Marchmont, the first female Formula One driver, a distinction that immediately places enormous pressure on her shoulders.

But Juliette’s challenges aren’t limited to what happens on the racetrack.

Waiting in the F1 world is Dominic Hastings, her former instructor and someone with whom she shares a complicated history. Their relationship brings rivalry, attraction and old wounds into a world where both characters are already operating under extraordinary pressure.

As MacLaren succinctly describes it:

But beneath the romance is Juliette’s determination to prove herself in an environment historically dominated by men.

The Real-World Inspiration Behind Juliette

The seeds for Juliette’s story were planted during the pandemic, when MacLaren began learning more about efforts to create opportunities for young women in motorsport.

That included the emergence of the F1 Academy, the all-female racing series created to develop and prepare female drivers for higher levels of competition.

It prompted a question that would eventually help shape Full Throttle: What would it look like for a woman to reach the very top?

Through Juliette, MacLaren was able to explore not only the physical demands of competing at that level, but also the scrutiny, expectations and pressure that would come with being the woman breaking that barrier.

Why Formula One and Romance Work Together

Formula One may seem like an unusual place to look for romance, but its inherent intensity gives a writer plenty to work with.

Drivers compete at extraordinary speeds knowing that one mistake can have enormous consequences. Careers can change in an instant. Rivalries are unavoidable. And behind the spectacle are athletes dealing with the psychological reality of repeatedly putting themselves in danger.

MacLaren was particularly interested in that side of the sport.

“You see these horrific crashes… What does it actually take to put your life on the line every single Sunday?”

That question gives Full Throttle stakes beyond who wins a race or who gets the girl.

Juliette and Dominic are navigating their feelings for one another while pursuing careers that demand intense focus and ambition. The racetrack doesn’t simply provide scenery for their romance; the pressures of that world help shape it.

From Research to Racing Fan

Writing convincingly about Formula One required MacLaren to venture into unfamiliar territory.

She admits that she didn’t begin the process as someone particularly interested in cars. That changed as she researched everything from racing culture to the mechanics behind the machines themselves.

“I found myself kind of getting into cars… I ended up enjoying the learning process more than I thought I would.”

That research allowed her to build a racing world that feels integral to the story rather than simply using Formula One as a glamorous backdrop.

For readers who already follow F1, there are recognizable elements of the sport to enjoy. But Full Throttle doesn’t require an encyclopedic knowledge of racing to understand what’s at stake for Juliette.

At its heart, this is still a story about two highly driven people figuring out what they want and what they’re willing to risk to get it.

An English literature graduate with a love for Shakespeare, MacLaren incorporates literary influences and references into her storytelling.

It’s an unexpected pairing that works particularly well in a novel built around big emotions, fierce competition and complicated relationships. Formula One may provide the speed, but MacLaren’s literary background helps give the characters and their relationships another layer.

More Than a Sports Romance

Full Throttle certainly delivers on its central promise of Formula One and romance, but Juliette’s story is also about ambition, resilience and what happens when pursuing your dream means stepping into a space where no one like you has stood before.

And then, just to make things a little more complicated, there’s Dominic.
