The Love Hypothesis Movie Review: Does the Adaptation Honor Ali Hazelwood’s Book?
Turning a popular romance novel into a movie comes with its own particular kind of pressure. Readers already know the characters, have pictured the pivotal moments and arrive with strong feelings about the fictional boyfriend at the center of it all. That made us both excited and a little nervous to watch Prime Video’s adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s The Love Hypothesis.
The good news for readers is that, although changes naturally have to be made when moving a story from the page to the screen, this adaptation retains the essence of the characters and the romance that first drew readers in.
An Academic Setting Made for Romance
Romance loves an academic setting, and The Love Hypothesis embraces it. The college environment, research labs and scientists give the story a distinct backdrop, but the movie never forgets to have fun with it.

The setting is especially effective for the fake-dating premise. Olive and Adam make an unexpected pair, which gives their supposed relationship plenty of room for disbelief, awkwardness and comedy. Once they have committed to the lie, they also have to spend enough time together to make it believable. That forced proximity creates exactly the kind of uncomfortable situations and simmering tension that make fake dating such an enduring romance trope.
The movie also knows when to take the characters outside the lab. A staff-and-student picnic creates some particularly funny moments, including mutual alarm over clothing choices (or lack there of). Costuming becomes another way of keeping the characters recognizable and letting their personalities come through, right down to one professor’s remarkably consistent “Dr. Evil” aesthetic.
Does The Love Hypothesis Stay True to the Book?
No movie adaptation can include every scene, detail or line from its source material. What matters is whether it preserves the qualities that made readers connect with the book in the first place.
Here, the filmmakers appear very aware that an established readership is coming to the movie. Olive looks and feels like the character Ali Hazelwood described, while Adam remains recognizable as the book boyfriend readers already love. Changing him too dramatically would almost certainly have caused an uproar, but this version does not lose the qualities that make him Adam.

Even when a familiar moment has been adjusted for the screen, the movie often retains a small word, detail or reference that lets readers know the original scene has not been forgotten. Those touches matter. They allow the film to make the structural changes it needs while giving book fans the pleasure of recognizing something meant especially for them. It really stands out that Ali Hazelwood was a part of the screenwriting!
As readers and viewers, we felt the movie found a satisfying balance between honoring the original story and functioning as a romantic comedy in its own right.
A Modern Story With Nostalgic Rom-Com Energy
One of the most pleasant surprises is the movie’s tone. The Love Hypothesis is contemporary, but its filmmaking and cinematography evoke the warm, polished feeling of the romantic comedies that defined the 1990s and early 2000s.
Those films remain iconic because of the feelings they created, and this movie captures some of that familiar warmth without becoming a period piece or losing its modern identity. Olive and Adam still feel like people viewers could pass on a college campus today. The scientific setting, the humor and the relationships all feel current, while the presentation carries a welcome touch of rom-com nostalgia.
That combination helps distinguish The Love Hypothesis from other recent romance adaptations. It delivers the expected romantic beats but also remembers the “com” in rom-com.
How Spicy Is The Love Hypothesis?
For viewers wondering about the spice level, this is a romance intended for a mature audience. On our entirely unofficial scale, we landed at approximately three-and-a-half out of five chili peppers.
The movie includes heat and tension, but those elements do not replace the storytelling. The central romance still develops through the characters’ conversations, awkward situations and growing emotional connection.

The Friendship at the Heart of the Story
Although The Love Hypothesis is a romance, its other relationships remain essential. Olive and Anh’s friendship brings a meaningful found-family element to the story.
These are women who walk beside one another, lift one another up and operate as each other’s ride-or-die. Showing that kind of friendship makes Olive feel like a more complete character and ultimately strengthens the romantic storyline as well. A compelling romance becomes even more effective when the people involved have full lives and relationships beyond the central couple.

Our Final Verdict
Popular books always create high expectations when they are adapted for the screen, and readers will inevitably notice the necessary changes. In this case, however, those changes do not erase the characters or the feeling of the original story.
The Love Hypothesis offers the fake-dating awkwardness, romantic tension, humor and recognizable character details readers are hoping to see. At the same time, it works as an inviting contemporary romantic comedy with a warm, nostalgic quality.
Our verdict is simple: read it, watch it and enjoy seeing Olive and Adam’s story make the leap from page to screen.
The Love Hypothesis begins streaming September 23 on Prime Video.
